Choutou-Ken Obanite Fountain Pen - Umezaki
This is the seventh installment in our series featuring beautifully crafted Japanese-style motifs using colored Obanite material. Equipped with an ultra-large 21K "Choutou-Ken" (long sword sharpened) nib, the Umezaki combines a sense of weight and elegance achieved through layered Obanite with detailed Chirashi-zukuri (scatter-cut) techniques.
Unique Nib Design:
The nib features an enlarged tip, shaped like a long sword blade, with a smooth, angled edge. When the pen is tilted, it produces a thick line; when held upright, it writes a fine line. Compared to standard nibs of the same width, the Choutou-Ken nib is noticeably broader, allowing for expressive and dynamic strokes.
Motif & Inspiration:
This edition depicts “Kameido Umeyashiki,” from Hiroshige’s Famous Places in Edo series. The depiction of the scenic shopfront, admired even by Van Gogh, is intricately embedded into the Obanite material, capturing the atmosphere of this historic and beautiful view. The edition includes a unique serial number, making each pen a one-of-a-kind collector’s item.
Touch & Craftsmanship:
Enjoy the smooth, refined feel of the beautiful Obanite material in your hand, combined with the flowing, precise writing experience of the special long sword-shaped nib.
Development Background of the Choutou-Ken Nib
Originating in 1911, the long sword-shaped nib was once lost during the post-war mass production of fountain pens and mechanization of nib manufacturing. However, master pen makers like Gunkichi Koyama and Nobuyoshi Nagahara inherited and revived this traditional technique.
In around 1991, inspired by customer feedback, Nobuyoshi Nagahara aimed to develop a fountain pen that could write at an angle, further refining the original techniques and reintroducing it as the modern Choutou-Ken.
